    Ted,

    Good, honest article.

In my opinion, article sites are best left well alone. I’ve only ever seen rankings fall from using these sites and with the Penguin update that seems to be de-valuing links that aren’t from “revelant sites”, they can only be bad. If you are using article sites, my advice would be to only use branded links or vary your anchor text hugely with each article.

“Make Great Content” is always my favourite suggestion for getting links, it’s just unfortunate that it’s easier in some fields than it is in others.

Wow. This is a very comprehensive article. I use some of the link building techniques that you mentioned in this post and the results are great. I must say that the infographic is great.
One more thing: the “Hard to get right” methods are rather Hard To Get in general.

Great content as always been the key to attaining links, now more so than even post penguin. I agree tat article writing as a form of quality links as diminished especially post Panda were relevance is so important. Quality blog and forum comments are key as are submissions to quality business sector directories. Te infographic idea is certainly new to me and something I will be testing. Thanks for a great post

An honest post as usual Ted – thanks!

My two cents on “Thoughtful Commenting”. It does take a while these links to take effect, but I deem them to be quite valuable. If you comment on industry related blogs, I think it’s a sign that you’re actively engaging in your community and providing your expertise = should be a good sign/social signal for Google. For obvious reasons, I would recommend using your own company name for anchor text or within the ‘Name’ section. Keep those links branded.

Article Marketing: I think you’re in the clear if you use editor-approved sites, and if your anchor text within the content is “natural”. IE, if your article is about cat food, but your anchor text is ‘cat scratching posts’ then there’s a problem.

Thank you for writing this article in a form that even a novice can understand. I own A & L Enterprises in Berryville AR, a small heat and air business. I’ve been in business for 40 years and it used to be easy to be found, just list in the yellow pages but it seems like everything is going online so I am trying to learn everything I can. I will recommend your site to other business owners for their education in the digital age.

Ted, excellent infographic and couldn’t agree more: great content is kind, but PR, guest blogs, Q & A and local citations are pretty cool too.

I do dislike the hype around Penguin and manipulative link profiles though. By that I mean: people are scared to link out to irrelevant content while they used to use it to make a point, they’re scared of exact match link text, etc.

In short: people are making shortsighted assumptions after Penguin instead of thinking beyond one step ahead, you know?

    Regards,

    Dennis Miedema

    Hey there Ted

I agree with your cool article. My favourite is Q&A technique. It indeed a good linking strategy, also we could use it as an article idea.

FYI, I’ve tried some kind of black hat seo you mentioned, but guess what ? None of them was working. Looks like google really did their best to support a “real blogger”.

This is definitely the BEST linkbuilding article I have ever read! I really appreciate the depth of explanations and the up-to-date information.

The ranking chart is amazing! I have already shared on my blog and pushed this article out through my social channels.

Thanks for the great information! This definitely deserves the link love 🙂

I couldn’t agree more with what Christopher had said in the comments that quality content attracts links – it was proven effective before and still is. Today, relevance plays a very important role when it comes to link building. For me, it is more important than page rank.

Wow! Great post! After Penguin and Panda, I assumed that most of the strategies that you said to do would be safe. I am glad to get a second opinion on it.

I never thought of the coupon idea and is something that I would like to implement. Of course, I just have to convince my clients to run a promotion. 🙂

    Thanks again!

Thanks for the great article. Absolutely loved it. Great list of link building strategies.
Infographics are a great way to build backlinks. But as you said I also think that it is not for long term as it is easy to detect.

    Thamks for the great post.

Humm you kept me wondering about the badges strategy I saw some similar things like making a cool design for a Website and asking them to post for a link. Eg. Vlc does.

    Great post

Ted, One thing I can let everyone know about your strategy is that it works particularly well for “geo specific” targeting. So if you have client who is not looking for global/universal results but is also not local, I am getting great results targeting states and regions. THANK YOU TED!

Guest blogging has always been working for me. We have to connect with influencers. it is the fastest method for traffic for me. Badges don’t work anymore. Google will penalize us for it.

Thanks Ted for such an informative article. I think some of the strategies mentioned are a little out of date now. For example, I wouldn’t really use Social Bookmarking for anything other than what it was originally designed for these days – or at least not directly to a money site.
